Agency: Port of Long Beach

Morgner’s Role: Project Designer and Manager

Project Description:

CUBED/Morgner was contracted by the Port of Long Beach to study the existing Pasha Terminal energy capacity and create an energy system that would allow it to be fully operable off-the-grid; meaning 100% independent of external energy resources in the event of an extended electricity shortage due to natural or man-made energy outages. This project included a full feasibility study to determine critical loads, solar/renewable energy capacity, energy management and storage system, as well as complete design and installation. The Pasha Terminal spans 40 acres, includes three (3) berths, three (3) 40-long-ton cranes, covered on-dock warehouses and nearly 235,000 sq. ft. of transit shed yards.

As part of this effort, we conducted an extensive energy audit and accurate inventory of the Terminal’s energy consumption, and then designed systems to produce and store enough energy to keep those functions operational off-the-grid. Phase 1 of the project included designing and installing off-the-grid LED lights. CUBED/Morgner successfully designed an Off-the-Grid system that provided the Terminal with the ability to have full load operations for nearly 20 hours per day, without external electrical support .
